Meet v know

Both "meet" and "know" can be translated as "conocer".

"Meet" is used to express the first time that you "conoces" someone - you introduce yourselves to each other. From that moment on, you know the person though not very well.

eg. I know David. He's Rachel's boyfriend. I met him a couple of months ago.

There is also "get to know" - "llegar a conocer" - which we use to describe the process of discovering more about people.

eg. She seems nice. I'd like to get to know her.

"Meet" can also have the meaning of "quedar con" or "encontrar"

eg I meet my friends every Saturday.
eg You'll never guess who I've just met*.

* Here you could use "bump into" - a chance meeting with someone ie not arranged.
