Verb Patterns with "to"

Verb patterns are tricky.

There are verbs which are followed by the infinitive eg I want to go.

There are verbs which are followed by the -ing form eg I don't mind going.

There are verbs which are followed by objects eg I advised him to go.

There are verbs which are followed by a that clause eg I told you that I was going.

There are other combinations too.

Some verbs can take more than one form.

There can be a difference in meaning eg I stopped to go / I stopped going.

Let's concentrate on the verbs that are followed by the infinitive. Complete the following sentences in a suitable way.

A.
  1. The customer demanded to ...
  2. Her boyfriend promised to ...
  3. I hope to ... before the end of the year.

Hi Ana,

I'm finally getting round to answering you.

A

2.Her boyfriend promised to take her on holiday in May.
When "promise" is followed by a person, we can't use a second verb ie Her boyfriend promised her.

3.I hope to finish my project before / by the end of the year.

4. He deserves to get a special present for his good behaviour. He deserves to get a present because he was so well-behaved.

6.I would love to travel to the USA one day. It's always been an ambition of mine.

B.

6.My boss agreed to raise our wages /give us a pay rise. I was amazed.

C.

1.I decided not to meet her on Friday so I didn't get any news.

2.I tried to arrive early because I want to meet him alone.
"pretend" = "fingir":
I pretended to be listening.

5.My teacher threatened to fail me if I didn't work harder.
"tough" = "difficult": That was a really tough exam.

Well done!
