Adverbs of Manner

Adverbs of manner tell how stg is done.

Most adverbs of manner end in -ly.

Notice the change from adjective to adverb:

She's a careful driver.                                     She drives carefully. (How does she drive?)

Her Spanish is perfect.                                   She speaks Spanish perfectly. (How does she speak?)

It was an easy win.                                         They won easily. (How did they win?)

Some -ly words are in fact adjectives:

That was a silly mistake.

We had a lovely time.

He's a friendly guy.

There are, as always, exceptions to the rule.

Your English is good.                                        He speaks English well.

He is a fast walker.                                            He walks fast.

She's a hard worker.                                         She works hard.

I had a late night.                                               I got home late.

I have an early start tomorrow.                          I have to get up early tomorrow.

Is this line straight?                                            I went straight home after work.

"Hardly" and "lately" exist as adverbs of frequency:

I could hardly hear what she was saying.

Have you read any good books lately (= recently)?

Adverbs of manner often follow the verb.

When there is an object, the adverb goes after it:

He read carefully the document carefully.

I drove slowly the car slowly.

The adverb is sometimes placed before the verb for emphasis.

Be careful with the spelling changes:

consonant + y - happy - happily

adjectives ending in ic - tragic - tragically

vowel + e - true - truly

adjectives ending in le - simple - simply

Choose from the following adjectives and complete the sentences with the adverb form.

abrupt    brave    careful    deliberate    easy    foolish    generous    hard
