FCE Speaking (Part 2)

Here is an example of the picture comparison. Complete the missing words.

FCE Test 3 (2008) Pictures 4C and 4D

Q: In this part of the test I'm going to give each of you two photographs. I'd like you to talk about your photographs on your own for about 1 minute and also to answer a short question about your partner's photographs.

Q: (Candidate A), here are your photographs. I'd like you to compare the two photographs and say why the people have chosen to go to these places.

Q: All right?

Well(a) pictures show outdoor activitites.

In the first picture, we can see (b) of hikers taking a rest and admiring the view (c) in the second there is a group of people who are travelling fast down a river.

They look (d) if they are having fun (e) in my opinion it (f) be a little dangerous.

In the two pictures they are wearing clothes that are appropriate for what they are doing. In the first they are wearing boots and in the second they (g) life vests on.

In the first picture they have what (h) like a tent so I suppose they will spend the night in the mountains. They are (i) a couple or close friends.

On the other (j), in this picture they could be colleagues. It's the kind of thing that you do (k) improve your ability to work as a team.

I think being on the river is (l) more exciting than climbing mountains.

The couple in the first picture s___ very relaxed. Perhaps they have escaped the stresses and the n____ of a city and need to enjoy the p____ and q____ that you can find in the mountains.

I would imagine that the group love a c________ and the t_____ of such an activity.

The examiner will then ask Candidate B a short question about these photographs.

Q: Thank you (Candidate A). (Candidate B) which activity would you most like to do?

I have (m) been rafting. I think I'd be (n) frightened to try. I love being in the mountains so I'd (o) go hiking.

Candidate B will then do their long turn with a different set of photographs and at the end, Candidate A will be asked a short question.

What other expressions do you think are useful for this part of the speaking?

How would you compare Pictures 4A and 4B and how would you answer the question about painting the walls?

Hi Graham! This is Inés

In both pictures there are a couple of people painting the walls.

In the first picure they are painting what is probably their house, whereas in the other picture they are outdoors, cleaning the dirty walls.

Here (in the first one) they look as if the are having fun. This might be because they are decorating their own house, which is very satisfying.

On the second picture they may be reparing an old house because we can see some ruins such as a bath. Covering graffitis as they are doing on the second picture mustn't be very fun, but it's important for keeping the streets and the cities clean.

The first couple seem relaxed, they might be painting the walls carefully because they probably want them to be perfect.

The other one must be a bit stressed, they have a lot of work to do.

The bottom one reminds me of last summer, when my family and I painted our whole house in the countryside. At first it was fun, but when we finished I was really tired.

See you tomorrow Graham!

DESCRIBING PICTURES (C16):
In the two pictures there are a man and a woman painting, but they don't look professionals.
I would imagine that, the people who are in both pictures are friends or family.
In the first image the couple is indoors, however, in the other image they're outdoors.
In both pictures they're wearing old t-shirts or clothes that don't care if they get dirty because of the paint.
They might be a bit tired, because they are working hard.
These photos reminds me of last summer when I help my father to paint the walls of our little house that is in the mountains.

I think that in the first image the couple is painting their house. In the other hand, in the picture B they could do voluntary work , repairing the streets' walls.

Hi Ana,

You are off to a good start.

The only ones you didn't get were:

g. have vests on = be wearing vests

c is for challenge. A challenge is stg that is difficult to do but can give you satisfaction.

t is for thrill. A thrill is something that excites you.

See you tomorrow!
