Shall we dance? / Let's dance

Shall We Dance? - The King and I

(Anna sings)
We've just been introduced
I do not know you well
But when the music started something drew me to your side
So many men and girls are in each others arms
It made me think we might be similarly occupied

Shall we dance, on a bright cloud of music
Shall we fly
Shall we dance
Shall we then say goodnight and mean goodbye
Or per chance, when the last little star has left the sky
Shall we still be together with our arms about each other
And shall you be my new romance
On the clear understanding that this kind of thing can happen
Shall we dance, shall we dance, shall we dance

(Interlude)

Shall we dance, on a bright cloud of music
Shall we fly
Shall we dance
Shall we then say goodnight and mean goodbye

(The King Sings)
Or per chance, when the last little star has leave the sky

(Anna Sings)
Shall we still be together with our arms about each other
And shall you be my new...

(Both Sing)
Romance
On the clear understanding that this kind of thing can happen
Shall we dance, shall we dance, shall we dance

Let's dance - David Bowie

Let's dance put on your red shoes and dance the blues

Let's dance to the song
They're playin' on the radio

Let's sway
While color lights up your face
Let's sway
Sway through the crowd to an empty space

If you say run, I'll run with you
If you say hide, we'll hide
Because my love for you
Would break my heart in two
If you should fall
Into my arms
And tremble like a flower

Let's dance for fear
Your grace should fall
Let's dance for fear tonight is all

Let's sway you could look into my eyes
Let's sway under the moonlight,
This serious moonlight

If you say run, I'll run with you
If you say hide, we'll hide
Because my love for you
Would break my heart in two
If you should fall
Into my arms
And tremble like a flower

Let's dance put on your red shoes
And dance the blues

Let's dance to the song
They're playin' on the radio

Let's sway you could look into my eyes
Let's sway under the moonlight,
This serious moonlight

Both shall we and let's are used to make suggestions that include the speaker.

Shall is in question form whereas let's is in imperative form.
  • A: Shall we go for a coffee?          B: OK but I have to finish this e-mail first.
  • A: Shall we just stay at home tonight?          B: Yeah, I don't feel like going out.
  • A: Shall we try that new Italian restaurant?        B: Yes, I'd love to.
  • A: Shall we phone her?        B: Yes, let's.
  • A: Shall we finish this tomorrow?          B: No, I'd rather finish it now.

We can also use question words with shall:
  • A: What shall we have for dinner tonight? B: How about a curry? We haven't had one for ages.
  • A: Where shall we meet?       B: Let's meet in front of the theatre.
  • A: What time shall we set off tomorrow?     B: I'd like to be away by 9am.

  • Let's wait until the weekend. There is no hurry to start.
  • Let's walk. It's a nice day and the exercise will do us good.
  • A: Let's watch the documentary on Channel 2.         B: No, I'd prefer to watch the film on Channel 5.
  • A: I have an idea. Let's have a party to celebrate passing our exams.    B: That's a great idea.
  • Let's start, shall we?

Hi!

I've listened to two songs. I prefer second one, of course. I like David Bowie. But it's easier undestanding first one that second one.
I've read the grammar point that you are wrote about this. Very interesting....

Ah! I've listened to song "Space Oddity". I saw the film of the video....
Bye.

Hi Graham, it's Nacha:
Firstly, thank for your corrections and for to make the blog so pleasant. I have heard "Shall we dance" three times...
With the last lesson about reporting verbs I realized how difficult is to speak properly. The false friends is another subject to devote time.
it is notoriously difficult to write a redaction in English, but I would like to make mayself understood in a daily language.
Thank

Hi Lucía,

Don't tell anyone but I wouldn't mind watching The King and I.
