A Pint After A Jog

During a discussion about "diet and lifestyle", Juan informed us that a beer after some exercise is better than water.

There is no better incentive. So I'm looking forward to jogging tomorrow...

Beer after sport 'is good for the body'

A beer after playing a game of football, a long run, or a strenuous round of golf can be good for the body, scientists say.

In a rare piece of good news for those who like a pint, Spanish researchers say beer can help someone who is dehydrated retain liquid better than water.

Prof Manuel Garzon, of Granada University, also claimed the bubbles in beer help to quench the thirst and that its carbohydrate content can help to replace lost calories.

Prof Garzon asked a group of students to do strenuous exercise in temperatures of around 40ºC (104ºF). Half were given a pint of beer, while the others received the same volume of water.

Prof Garzon, who announced the results at a press conference in Granada beneath a banner declaring "Beer, Sport, Health", said the hydration effect in those who drank beer was "slightly better".

Juan Antonio Corbalan, a cardiologist who worked formerly with Real Madrid football players and Spain's national basketball team, said beer had the perfect profile for re-hydration after sport.

He added that he had long recommended barley drinks to professional sportsmen after exercise.

Previous studies have shown most alcoholic drinks have a diuretic effect - meaning they increase the amount of liquid lost by the body through urination.

Dr James Betts, an expert on nutrition and metabolism at Bath University, said a moderate amount of beer might be just as good as water at helping the body retain liquid, but that he doubted it could be any better.

Dr Betts said: "If you are dehydrated to start with following exercise, a beer, as opposed to a spirit, probably does not have a high enough concentration of alcohol to induce a diuretic effect."

Yes. One beer after doing exercise is good for you, because beer have a lot of Carbohydrates,Proteins,Amino-acids,Vitamin-B...and that´s good to recover you after your workout. Only one or two, because to drink alcohol can make you to become dehydrated(although in Rugby, for example,is very common to drink tons of beer after the match).

Tips: To eat five times a day,to have supper soon, and not Carbohydrates(rice, pasta)at night(Proteines better). Less sugar, animal fat,and salt.

Hi Roberto,

You seem to know quite a bit about fitness and diet.

You are right about pasta but I occasionally have it for dinner.

I think the problem is that there are too many "rules" regarding health issues. It's impossible to adhere to them all.

Hi Laura,

One of my students told me recently that you shouldn't eat fruit at the end of a meal.

You should take it between meals - as a snack.

As I said to Roberto, there are just too many dos and donts.

It´s a good thing to drink one after doing exercise...

Yes, a lot of rules..Sometimes is fun to break the rules. In any case,I think is good to know them, but it´s your choice,if you decide to follow them or not,of course... PD.Your right about the fruit.

Sorry!,I wanted to say "it´s good" and "you`re right".

Hi Graham

With all due respect, I don´t understand than so many drunks there are in this blog, from Scotland to Andalucía, passing by Galicia. ¡Strange phenomena! I thought, past days, if I could be vegetarian. Beer experts said that it´s good for the body, Mr Garzón from Granada University said that beer is healthier than water, Mr Corbalan said that beer had the perfect profile for rehydration, Mr Betts said that beer is as good as water and Mr Roberto from Galicia said that beer has proteins. It´s crazy. I can´t believe that alcohol is healthy. I have decide that is better to continue with my diet and lifestyle and don´t think in being vegetarian. LOL

Hi!
I don't know the scientific purpose but I agree with Spanish researchers. I care for a big beer after running a run.
Also in same research made by Universidad de Granada said a moderate intake of beer helps people to reduce the effects of stress situation.
I remember that when I breasted-feed my son I listened to heard about that beer it was a good thing. Tirso Pérez, a gynaecologist who work at Hospital Puerta de Hierro, said a moderate
amount of beer can be beneficial in pregnancy, breast-feeding and menopause.
I like beer but now I drink beer without alcohol.

bye

The massive extinction of dinosaurs was caused by an asteroid, 65,5 million years ago. This asteroid made the crater Chicxulub in the northwest of the peninsula of Yucatan in Mexico, the crater Silverpit in the sea of the North in front of the United Kingdom and the crater Boltysh in Ukraine. It seems that a lot of animals and plants extinguished but frogs survived to the extinction. ¿Why did any animals survive and others no? I think it was because some animals were protected and others no. The frogs were protected by water and dinosaurs no. I´m afraid that the human species isn´t protected by water. The drunks spread for the European Union, until Scotland. I don´t know if I´ll earn my retirement money because the human species is going to extinct with so hop, barley, so on. Please Graham, Lucía and Roberto stop drinking beer.

Cheers. José.

Hi Patricia,

I am having a beer now after a long day of work. It certainly helps me to relax.

I had quite a few glasses of wine when I finished my marathon on Sunday - but that was to celebrate.

This article is very intereting. I agree that beer is very healthy because it is made with yeast which is good for you, but I think water is better than beer when you are after doing exercise, I think it takes away more of the thirst.
