Kate Nash - The Nicest Thing

All I know is that you're so nice
You're the nicest thing I've seen
I wish that we could (1) it a go
See if we could be something

I wish I (2) your favourite girl
I wish you (3) I was the reason you are in the world
I wish my smile (4) your favourite kind of smile
I wish the way that I (5) was your favourite kind of style

I wish you couldn't (6) me out
But you always wanna know what I was about
I wish you'd (7) my hand
When I was upset
I wish you'd never (8)
The look on my face when we first met

I wish you (9) a favourite beauty spot
That you loved secretly
'Cause it was on a hidden bit
That nobody else could see
Basically, I wish that you (10) me
I wish that you (11) me
I wish that you (12) when I said two sugars,
Actually I meant three

I wish that without me your heart would (13)
I wish that without me you'd be (14) the rest of your nights awake
I wish that without me you couldn't (15)
I wish I was the last thing on your mind before you went to sleep

Look, all I know is that you're the nicest thing I've ever seen
And I wish that we could see if we could be something
Yeah I wish that we could see if we could be something

There are a lot of wishes in this song. Remind yourselves of how to construct sentences with wish. Listen to the song and try to fill in the missing verbs.

Hi Hilde,

Have you read any posts or done any other exercises related to wishes/regrets? (see Labels and Grammar sections)

I've listened to this song twice. I didn't know it. I liked it.

The missing words that I've understood are:

1. give it a go (do you know what that means?)

5. dressed (come on, you should have go that one from the context).

6. figure me out ( do you know what "figure out" means?)

7. hold (my hand)

8. had

9. loved ( remember that we don't use "wish+ present")

10. needed

13. (heart would) break

The others are fine. I think you found it a bit tricky.

Hi Graham. I had to hear the song ten times at least before finding all hidden verbs. I wish I was better in listening to English.
In the end, I got all of them.

See you on Tuesday.

Hi Montse,

It's a slow song but a few of the words are difficult to catch.

Don't worry - understanding lyrics doesn't necessarily reflect your level of English.

I wish I was better at listening In English.

See you in the morning.

Evening Alejandro,

I doubt this is your kind of song but it illustrates the use of wish.

1.I wish we could give it a go = I wish we could try to make our relationship work. Give sth a go = try sth, especially sth which you have little or no experience. e.g. Don't say you don't like rollerblading until you've given it a go.

6. I wish you couldn't figure me out. figure sb out = discover what they are really like, figure sth out = solve sth or come to understand sth e.g. I can't figure out these instructions. e.g. They still haven't figure out what caused the accident.

13. I wish that without me your heart would break
