No more long bank holiday weekends?

Spanish Businessmen call for an end to the 'Puente' long weekend

The CEOE employers organisations wants midweek fiestas to be moved to Monday or Friday

Spanish businessmen from the employers’ organisation CEOE have come up with an idea to improve the country’s productivity. They want to eliminate any fiestas or bank holidays which fall during the week so that the famous custom of forming ‘Puente’ or ‘Acueducto’ extra long bank holiday weekends can be ended.

What do you think of this idea?

Do you think any government will dare to implement it?

What do you think people's reaction will be?

Here is a longer article in El PaĆs that presents arguements for and against keeping the "puentes".

Hi Graham!

Did you heard that this law has been approved by the government. They said that the 1st May and the 1st Nov (if my memory is good) will change to Monday.

This way nobody will take a day off, all companies will be on holiday the week end and the monday. It's a good idea.

I think it's about the only announcement that they have made since being elected in November.

What I'd like to know is when we are going to get the extra holidays for Xmas and New Year's day falling on a Sunday. I hope they won't just forget about it.
