Essay Errors


Here is a list of some of the mistakes I found in the essays about advice for foreign visitors to Spain. There might be more than one correction to make in each sentence. Many of them are minor mistakes but which you make all the time.
  1. When you meet somebody at first time, it is usual to kiss both cheeks.
  2. If someone invite you to his home, it is important to carry something like a bottle of wine as well as it is not acceptable to take your shoes off
  3. I think the social customs in Spain are very similar from Western countries,
  4. If you are going to visit Spain, you couldn't forget this rules:
  5. When you first meet a person, it's common for men shake hands.
  6. In the first time, it's polite to use the more formal "usted" but today it isn't usual for young people.
  7. In a party or a social reunion, it's not acceptable to speak about religion or politicians. These are annoying topics and the people can be a bit upset.
  8. It's very rude to eat at differents hours because the workers in restaurants then would work 16 hours at day.
  9. Spain is the sunnyest country in Europe and is famous for it's funny.
  10. It is usual to take a dinner at 2100 hours or so.
  11. If you are a gay couple, you can do it too but not in all places is accepted.
  12. It's common be greeted with two kisses.
  13. We have a reputation for being very fun.
  14. There are a lot of restaurants and bars along the city and the country.
  15. You can choose to go to a restaurant or a bar; they are opened later but if you choose a restaurant is better you book in advance.
  16. Other thing is the nap, only done in Spain.
  17. The food is consumed later (than in other countries) at 2 to 4.
  18. Like the Spanish go to bed very late,dinner is taking around 9pm to 11pm.
  19. There are many things that you should know before to visit Spain.
  20. ...because is common if you drive a car, you should have problems with the breathalyser test.
  21. You have many differents places for go out but I recommended the Huertas district and arounds.
  22. I recommended take a bus or a taxi is perfect.

Hi, Graham. How are things going? I hope you’re enjoying your holidays. I’ve done this exercise but I’ve written the sentences as I’d have said them. I suppose there are a lot of mistakes too.

2. If someone invite you to his home, it is important to carry something like a bottle of wine as well as it is not acceptable to take your shoes off.- If someone invites you to home it’s important to take something like a bottle of wine. It’s not correct to take your shoes off.

These exercises are usually the most difficult kind but even more so when you haven't made the mistakes. Let's see how you have done.

1. When we meet somebody for the first time, we usually give THEM a kiss ON both cheeks.

2. If someone invites you TO THEIR home, it’s important to take something like a bottle of wine. NEITHER IS IT correct to take your shoes off.

4. If you are going to visit to Spain, you can’t forget THESE RULES:

5. When you meet a person for the first time, men usually shake each OTHER'S HAND / When you first meet a person, it's COMMON FOR MEN TO shake hands.

6. It’s polite to use the more formal “usted” for THE FIRST TIME you meet somebody although young people don’t usually do it.
7. AT a party or OTHER SOCIAL EVENT it's not acceptable to speak about religion or politics. Both are annoying topics that can BOTHER / UPSET OTHER people.

8. It's very rude to eat at DIFFERENT TIMES because the workers in restaurants then would work 16 hours A DAY. / It’s really rude to eat out of the ESTABLISHED TIMES FOR meals because the workers couldn’t rest.

10. ... at 2100 hours or so. -It’s usual to have dinner around 21:00 p.m.

11. If you are a gay couple, you can do it too but IT ISN'T ACCEPTABLE EVERYWHERE / If you’re a gay couple, YOU MIGHT have problems in some places.

12. It's common TO be greeted with two kisses. / It’s usual to greet somebody BY giving him two kisses.

13. We have a REPUTATION FOR being GOOD FUN.
