Man Arrested For Being Naked In Own Kitchen

An American man who brewed coffee naked in his own kitchen is facing indecent exposure charges and could be jailed.

Eric Williamson, 29, from Virginia, insists he has done nothing wrong and any exposure of his private parts was purely accidental.

Williamson was making coffee in the buff at 5.30 a.m. when a woman and her seven-year-old son walked past his kitchen window in Springfield.

The woman then called the police.

Fairfax County Police spokeswoman Mary Ann Jennings said the woman claimed Williamson then moved and exposed himself again through a large front window.

In his defence, Williamson said: "I'm by myself. So I come down here - the roommates are gone, and it's my house.

"I never had a conversation with anyone, never saw anyone. Didn't cross my mind, came and got coffee. I mean if I stood and seemed comfortable in my kitchen possibly it's natural. It's my kitchen."

Williamson, who is the father of a five-year-old girl, continued: "I am a loving dad. Any of my friends... and anyone knows that.

"And there is not a chance on this planet that I would ever, ever do anything like that to a kid."

Trial lawyer Dickson Young, who is not connected with the case, explained that "in order for it to be a crime, they have to prove - the state and police - have to prove that he knew those people were there when he was standing there.

"The statute requires an intentional display of your private parts. So if you are occasionally displaying them, accidentally displaying them, inadvertently displaying them it's not a crime."

Ms Jennings said the police would not pursue a case based on inadvertent exposure. The charge is a misdemeanour punishable by up to a year in jail.

What is your opinion? Could the same thing happen in Spain?

I wonder what would have happened if it had been the other way round. Imagine it was the man who saw the woman walking naked around her home. Who would they have arrested?

She was apparently taking a shortcut through his yard. Shouldn't she be arrested for trespassing?

Another point to think about - it's OK in the USA to shoot somebody on your private property.

I have a neighbour who lives in the building in front of me. She likes to stand at her window for much of the day and see what is happening on the street. She also likes to stare at me; I have no privacy in my own home! Could she report me for indecent exposure? She really annoys me. What would you do if you were me?

This story reminded me of another one in the UK where a man attempted to walk the length of the country naked. He came to be known as the Naked Rambler. Read article 1 , article 2 and article 3 to get an idea of the story.

Hi Joaquin!

Good to know that you are out there following the blog!

Even with a short sentence, I can find some mistakes LOL

You should have said: (The)People in THE USA ARE crazy.

I don't think Americans are crazier than any other nationality.

How about writing a little bit more the next time? I know that you are a keen student LOL

See you tomorrow!

sorry for that :(

About the news, I say crazy because they have a justice system that allow these situations become real.

See you tomorrow Graham XD

I have the same opinion that Joaquin, When I saw this news I thought "some people in USA are so crazy".

The problem in this case is the woman, because she was looking inside the house.

In my opinion everybody can do that they want in their own house.

What do you thing?

also the problem is the police and the judge, anyone have common sense in that chain?

I am glad to see the two of you agree! lol

I think that the story has made headlines in the USA and around the world because it is unusual.

Alvaro:

I have THE SAME oponion AS Joaquin. When I saw this news, I thought "some people in THE USA are so crazy".

Joaquin:

The problem is ALSO the police and the judge. DOESN'T anyone have common sense in that chain?

Maybe the two of you could exchange opinion on another topic.

Hi, Graham.

I think that, sometimes, people in USA are a bit crazy. People there have a extreme ideas. Their "kind of life" is based on the freedom but if nobody is alowed to do things like that at home....I don't understand them and what about the mindless violence what is ever-present in their lives?.I hope those ideas never come here.

I agree, Montse. The USA is a land of extreme contradictions.

I think it is only a matter of time until something similar happens here.

Nobody has been able to tell me the law here. I get the impression that privacy isn't so important for the Spanish. Can you do what you like within your four walls even if it is in full view of others?

Could you follow the follow-up report OK?

Hi, Graham.

I think that, in this subject, Spanish people are more permissive than American people. We think people can do whatever they want if it’s not a crime. If you are really interested to know what our penal code says about that, the arts. 185 and 186 are about it. (http://www.boe.es/aeboe/consultas/bases_datos/doc.php?id=BOE-A-1995-25444).

These articles are very interesting too:

We think people can do whatever they want AS LONG AS it’s not a crime.

Arts. 185 and 186 don't really tell me if I can do what I like in my own home.

However, it's good to know that I have the right to wander the streets of Barcelona stark naked.

Did you go to the links about the naked rambler in the UK?
