Catch it, Bin it, Kill it

Here is an ad, in reaction to the flu pandemic, which shows how easily a virus is spread.

Do you think that the advert is effective?

What do you think about the whole Swine flu thing?

Do you think we are over-reacting or should we be doing more to combat it? Are you ready?

What's the difference between ill and sick? This is a difficult one because there is sometimes little difference but I'll try to explain.

Ill implies a more serious condition that lasts longer.

  • He's been very ill. (He was off work for a long time)
  • As soon as I started to feel ill, I went to the doctor (I had symptoms and the doctor told me what I had)
  • I got ill while I was on holiday. ( I discovered what I had when I returned from holiday)

Sick implies a less serious condition that doesn't last long. It can also mean to vomit.
  • He's off sick today. He'll be back tomorrow. (He didn't come to work)
  • If you don't feel well, you should call in sick. (Phone your work to tell them you are not going to work today)
  • I think I'm going to be sick. (= vomit)
Is that any clearer?

When were you last ill?

How many days were you off work sick last year?

Have you ever phoned in sick to work but you weren't really sick (= thrown a sickie)?

What do you do when you feel ill? Are you a good patient or are you always complaining?

Hi Graham,

I think the advert is very effective because it shows us what a swine can cause if he is coronavirus ill or Chinese flu. We have to be careful what we do.

In my opinion, all the animals have a lot of illnesses. Human beings too, because we are animals. Everybody transmits illness each other. When human beings transmit illness to animals we don´t know it because animals don´t tell it us. We know that there are a lot of illnesses which animals transmit to humanity such as the mad cow disease, swine flu, avian influenza and so on. (I don´t remember some illness from sheep). So all the animals have to be careful and we must live together but not mixed. Intelligent people, like my father, told me that we have to live with animals and we must care about them but without everyone is mixed.

We have been very apathetic about Chinese flu, even we couldn´t care less, for instance, Mr. Sanchez, Mr. Johnson, Mr. Trump and so on. Now there a lot of dead. We must be very sad. We should be doing more.

I was last ill when I had a surgical operation of hernia, five years ago more or less. I was off work during some twenty days which establishes the protocol for this kind of illness.

I wasn´t any day off work sick last year, although I had a problem with my health but I went to work every day.

I have not thrown a sickie in my life. One day I slept and I arrived to my job late. My colleagues laugh at me, but I didn´t care it.

Generally speaking, I go to the doctor when I feel ill. They know more than me about illness. It is depend on what they told me about my illness and then I´ll pay attention about their advices. I don´t know if I am a good patient or not. You have to ask my wife about it but always she is wrong.

See you.

Good evening José,

I like the advert but I'm not sure how effeective it is. I was reading today about Florence Nightingale (see Twitter) and how she promoted good personal hygiene. That was around 170 years ago. People still don't do simple things like washing their hands after going to the bathroom or putting their hand over their mouth when they cough or sneeze.

Hi Graham!

I think this ad it's a good representation about how easily germs spread into our lifes. But, also I think it's a bit alarmist...
I remember about the swine flu, I think it was more or less 14 years ago. I was in the high school and that year teachers were truly concern about this illness/disease, and it was mandatory to bring sanitary alcohol to the school. In the end I remember nothing happened, at least nobody that I know.
Overall I think we over-react, specially when a new ill emerges. Obviusly, it's important to have a good hygiene with ourselfes and take care of our helth in order to prevent getting sick.
I get sick or catch colds quite often, but usually this only lasts one day or even less, so I don't take a day off. Last time I was really sick was this year on March I catched a flu and I was in my bed with fever. I was suppossed to work that day on a school but luckily they phoned me to say that the job was cancelled. I told them it was a pity, byut inside miself I was glad.
I don't really mind being ill, as long as I don't have important things to do. I usually use these days for rest and watch movies. But if I'm really ill and with fever I can be more unpleasant and moody.

Hi María,

Swine flu was a walk in the park compared to Covid. The latter, unfortunately, will still be talked about for many years to come but I can't remember much about the former. I don't think we've learned much from either.
