I don't like Mondays - The Boomtown Rats

(When) The silicon chip inside her head
Gets switched to overload
And nobody’s gonna go to school today
She’s gonna make them stay at home
And daddy doesn’t understand it
He always said she was good as gold
And he can see no reasons
'Cos there are no reasons
What reason do you need to be show-ow-ow-ow-own?

Tell me why I don’t like Mondays
Tell me why I don’t like Mondays
Tell me why I don’t like Mondays
I wanna shoo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oot the whole day down

The Telex machine is kept so clean
And it types to a waiting world
And mother feels so shocked
Father’s world is rocked and their thoughts turn to their own little girl
Sweet 16 ain’t that peachy keen Now that ain’t so neat to admit defeat
They can see no reasons
'Cos there are no reasons
What reasons do you need?
Oh Oh Oh Oh

Tell me why I don’t like Mondays
Tell me why I don’t like Mondays
Tell me why I don’t like Mondays
I wanna shoo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oot
The whole day down, down, down, shoot it all down

And all the playing's stopped in the playground now
She wants to play with the toys a while
And school's out early and soon we'll be learning
And the lesson today is how to die
And then the bullhorn crackles
And the captain tackles
(With the problems of the how's and why's)
And he can see no reasons
'Cos there are no reasons
What reason do you need to die, die?Oh Oh Oh

"I Don't Like Mondays" was a UK number one single for four weeks in July 1979. Written by Bob Geldof and performed by The Boomtown Rats, it was the band's second number one single.

Geldof wrote the song after reading a telex report on the shooting spree of 16-year-old Brenda Ann Spencer, who fired at children playing in a school playground across the street from her home in San Diego, California. She killed two adults and injured eight children and one police officer. Spencer showed no remorse for her crime, and her explanation for her actions was "I don't like Mondays." The song was first performed less than a month later at the Fox Theatre, San Diego.

Despite being a major hit in the United Kingdom, it only reached #73 on the Billboard Hot 100, partly due to Geldof's antagonistic attitude towards U.S. radio stations. The song was played regularly on Monday mornings by album-oriented rock format radio stations in the United States throughout the 1980s, although radio stations in San Diego continued not to play the track for some years in respect to the local sensitivity surrounding the events on which it was based. The song became Number One in the UK single charts in July 1979. It was subsequently covered by Tori Amos on her 2001 album Strange Little Girls and later by G4 on their 2006 album Act Three.

At a concert in London in 1995, just before the tenth anniversary of Live Aid (during which Geldof himself performed the song in the Boomtown Rats' final major appearance), Bon Jovi covered the song after being joined on stage by Geldof at Wembley Stadium. This recorded performance features on Bon Jovi's live album One Wild Night Live 1985-2001, as well as on the bonus 2-CD edition of These Days. Geldof himself performed an impromptu version of the song while hosting the Live 8 concert in London, on July 2 2005 (11 days before the 20th anniversary of Live Aid).

Hi Graham,

Actually, Mondays aren´t a problems for me, perhaps when I was younger yes, but no now. I think there are a lot of things worst. But if Monday is a bad day for you, you can do a small change in your brain and you can start the week on Sunday!.

When I have to get up on a Monday morning, I fell that it don´t like me, certainly but it´s only for a few seconds. I´m looking forward to the day like anyone day.

On Monday, I get up at seven o´clock to pick up my children at school and then I go to work at my office. These day I´ve have got an English class, in the afternoon.I stop for lunch during one hour more or less and I return to work untill the five o´clock for to drop off my children. Then I drive at home. Later, I carry my daughter her dance class and then we have a dinner. I watch some TV programmeand then I go to sleep, very tired of course.

Hi Sonia:

I don't like Mondays much but I actually think that Tuesdays are worse.

Actually, Mondays aren´t A PROBLEM for me, perhaps when I was younger THEY WERE but NOT now. I think there are a lot of WORSE things. But if Monday is a bad day for you, you can MAKE a small change in your brain and you can start the week on Sunday!

When I have to get up on a Monday morning, I FEEL that I DON'T LIKE IT, but it only LASTS for a few seconds. I´m looking forward to the day like ANY OTHER day.

On Monday, I get up at seven o´clock to DROP OFF my children at school (GIVE MY CHILDREN A LIFT TO SCHOOL) and then I go to work at my office. THAT day I'VE GOT an English class in the afternoon.I stop for lunch FOR ABOUT one hour and I return to work UNTIL five o´clock TO PICK UP my children. Then I DRIVE HOME. Later, I TAKE my daughter TO her dance class and then we have dinner. I watch some TV programme and then I go to sleep, very tired of course.

- "durante 1 hora" isn't "during 1hour but FOR 1 HOUR. We use "for" with length of time: for 2 days, for 3 months etc and "during" with nouns: during the film, during the lesson etc

-"Home" doesn't require or doesn't take a preposition. eg go home, arrive home, get home, stay (at)home, be (at) home, drive home etc

-"carry" means to have in your hands eg carry a baby have with you eg British police don't carry guns.

-"para hacer algo" isn't "for to do something"; simply "TO DO SOMETHING" I went to the shops TO BUY a new jacket in the sales.

-we don't use an article in have breakfast, have lunch, have dinner...

- be careful with the verb "like"

I hope you understand and remember your mistakes.

You can go back to some of the posts in September or October to make your next comment.

See you Wednesday!

Hi, Graham. I didn’t know the story of this song and it’s surprised to me. In Spain, it was a big hit as well and nowadays you can still listen to it on the radio. I like it but from now on I’ll listen to it to a different way.
I hate Mondays only when I have to wake up. After this it’s a day like anyone and any day can be a great day (as Joan Manuel Serrat says- one of the my favourite Spanish singer song-writers- in his song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEt-XcqQz4A&feature=related)

I hope you have a good Monday! I see you on Tuesday.

Mondays normally aren't as bad as I think they are going to be. Getting up and getting ready is a slow process for me any day of the week.

I didn’t know the story of this song and I FIND IT SURPRISING. After this it’s a day like ANY OTHER.

(I'LL) SEE YOU ON THURSDAY!

I did know this story. In highschool, I had to learn the lyrics by heart for my english class and the teacher explained to us the story.
I really like the song, but I don't like Bob Gedolf at all. I found him a bit false...
See you!

I am not a fan of Geldof either. "I don't like Mondays" is the best known song by The Boomtown Rats and I think he is most famous for organizing Band Aid in the mid 80s. For that he was made an honorary "Sir". He can't officially use the title because he's Irish.

... for my English class and the teacher EXPLAINED THE STORY TO US.

I think it's unwise to explain such a story to children. It might give them ideas.

Let's see how much of the song you remember tomorrow.
