Ban bullfighting NOW!!!

Six protestors jumped into the ring after the killing of the first bull in the fight yesterday

A group of half a dozen anti-bullfighting protesters jumped into the ring at Madrid’s famous Ventas bullring yesterday. They held up banners in Spanish and English protesting against animal ill-treatment and then sat down in the ring. Up to now such protests in Spain have been limited to gatherings outside bullrings.

The protestors who want to see an end to bullfighting were *booed by the crowd and finally removed by the bullring’s security guards.

Spotlight on Vocabulary:

The protestors ... were *booed by the crowd.

When you strongly dislike or disapprove of something or someone, you make a noise (*boo). It is often accompanied by whistling. Listen to the bullfighting video for an example.
  • The fans were so angry at their team's performance that they started booing loudly.
  • The crowd of protesters booed and whistled at the prime minister as he arrived.

I admire the guts of the protestors to do what they did.

If only there were more people like them!

I find the ignorance of the spectator, who shouts "fuera de espaƱa", incredible. All the protestors are, in fact, Spanish.

I agree with protestors… to kill animals just for fun is un extremely act of cruelty and no matter in the name of what (National fiesta)., In spite of it, some opinions try to defend
certain kind of plastic and esthetic beauty in the ancient fight : “man against the beast”.

I also want to bring up here, other excess like thousands of wild seals and otters massacred every single year, to make fur coats, or the slaughter of wild animals that take place all over the world to satisfy, the ancestral instinct of hunters.

I am so glad to hear you hold such opinions Alfredo!

You should take a look at Equanimal's website:

http://www.equanimal.org/2/

Here you will be able to learn about all the cruelty to animals that is happening in this country and all over the world.

You can sign a petition to show your disgust at the sickening massacre of seals in Canada.

This summer I want to go to the anti-San Fermin protest. Do you want to join me?

"I agree with THE PROTESTORS(1)... to kill animals just for fun is an EXTREME act of cruelty, no matter WHAT(2)IT IS IN THE NAME OF.

In spite of ALL THIS, some opinions try to defend
certain KINDS of plastic and esthetic beauty in the ancient fight : “man against beast”.

I also want to bring up OTHER EXCESSES (3)SUCH AS THE thousands of wild seals and otters massacred every single year to make fur coats, or the slaughter of wild animals that TAKES place all over the world to satisfy the ancestral instinct of hunters."

(1) When you are talking about something in particular you use the definite article: "the"
Without it, you are talking generally, in this case about all protestors.

(2) No matter is often followed by a question word (what, where, how, when).
eg No matter what happens I will help you = whatever happens I will help you.
eg No matter where I go on holiday, it rains = wherever I go on holiday, it rains.

(3)bring up = mention "bring up" is followed by an object
eg (in a work meeting)I'd like to bring up the matter of overtime. I think that.....

Maybe the next time it will be me in the bullring holding up banners!
