Your Song

The other day while I was in the gym
working out, I heard this song.

I think it is a good version of Elton John's classic and certainly is one of those songs that makes you feel good.

Check out this other post on feel-good songs.

Your Song - Billy Paul

It's a little bit funny, Lord, this feeling inside
I'm not one of those who can easily hide
I don't have much money but, boy, if I did
I'd buy a big mansion where we both could live

If, if, if I was a sculpture, Lord honey
But then again who knows (then again who knows)
Or a man who makes potions in a travelin' show
I know it's not much, I know it's not much
But it's the best I can do
You gave me a gift Lord, and I'm gonna sing it for you

And you can tell everybody
That this is your song (this is your song)
It may be a quite, quite simple, but that's how it's done
I hope you don't mind, I hope you don't mind
What I wrote down in words, words
How wonderful life is when you're in the world, world, world

If, if, (if), if I was on a rooftop
I'd kick off my shoes (kick my shoes, kick my shoes off)
I'll write a few verses and then I get the blues
But the sun's been quite, quite kind while I wrote this song
It's for people like you and people like me
I wanna, I wanna keep a turnin' on

So excuse me for forgetting
But these things I do Lord (these things I do Lord)
You see, you see I've forgotten if they're green or blue
Anyway the thing is, anyway the thing is, what I really mean
You've got the sweetest eyes, you've got the sweetest eyes
The clearest eyes I've ever seen, I hope you go back I hope you,

I hope you go back and tell everybody
That this is your song (this is your song)
It may be quite, quite simple, but now that's how it's done
I hope you don't mind, I hope you don't mind
But I wrote down in words, Lord words
I'm doin' it for how wonderful it is
When you're in the world, world, world, world

If, if, (if), if I sat upon a rooftop and kicked off my shoes
(Kick off my shoes, kick my shoes off)
I'll write a few verses and then I get the blues
But the sun's been quite, quite kind while I wrote this song
It's for people like you, people like me
I wanna, wanna keep turnin' on
So excuse me, so excuse me

So excuse me forgetting
But these things I do (these things I do Lord)
You see, you see I've forgotten if they're green or blue, baby
And anyway the thing is, anyway the thing is
What I really mean
You are the sweetest eyes, the sweetest eyes
The sweetest eyes I've ever seen

I want you to go back, go back and and tell everybody
That Billy Paul's got a song (Billy Paul's got a song)
I'm, I'm gonna sit upon a, a rooftop and kick my shoes off
I'm gonna write it (write it), write it (write it), write it (write it)
I might come out with the Gospel (Gospel), the blues (blues)
The jazz (jazz), the rock and roll

I'm gonna, got to
Got to write me a simple song for everybody
Because this is my song (this is your song)
It may be quite, quite simple but that's the way it's done
I hope you don't mind, I hope you don't mind
What I wrote down in words, words
You come on back, you try to try again, try again

Tell everybody
That Billy Paul's got a song (Billy Paul's got a song)
It may be quite, quite simple but that's how it's done, baby
I hope you don't mind, I hope you don't mind
What I wrote down in words
Hold it, hold it, hold it, hold it, get back....

What is your favourite cover version (song sung by another artist)? And who do you think has destroyed the original version of a song?

Have a listen to this other version of Your Song by Ellie Gould and try to complete the lyrics.

Hi Graham:
I´ve seen you are improving the blog day by day. It´s fine. I think was a good idea to put your photo on it and to list the labels, too.

This window, it´s new?. I can´t see the lesson at the same time I´m writing. Neither do I to see the complete window.

Anyway about the lesson:
I like this song very much, I´ve got it at home. I agree, it´s a song that make you feel weel when you hear it. I´ve never read the lyric, thank you. It´s very romantic for example sentences as "How wonderful life is when you're in the world". I´d like somebody gift me a song, too.

In this case, I prefer the original version by Elton John.

note: I couldn´t see the words in green in the dictionary. The link not function.

I don´t know what is my favourite cover version, but I think that Guns and Roses did a very good version of the "Knocking on heavens door", a Bob Dylan song. The Rolling Stones have another good cover version of a bob Dylan song too: "Like a rolling stone". In the last tour of Oasis, they always finished their concerts with a explosive and good cover version of "My Generation" by The Who.I think Patti Smith always does very good cover versions of classic rock songs.
When a singer of music disc or house music do a cover version of a good song, I think always destroy it. For example, Fatboy Slim smashed The Joker of Steve Miller Band or Britney Spears with a cover version of "Satisfaction" by The Rolling Stones. I´ve ear horrible cover versions of songs by Nirvana, Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers or The Beatles.

I like this song very much, I´ve got it at home. I agree, it´s a song that make you feel well when you hear it. I HAD never read the LYRICS, thank you. It´s very romantic for example sentences SUCH AS "How wonderful life is when you're in the world". I´d like somebody WROTE A SONG FOR ME too.

In this case, I prefer the original version by Elton John.

PS I couldn´t see the words in green in the dictionary. The link DOESN'T WORK.

Sometimes the link to the dictionary won't work because there isn't one. I think it is more likely that you will remember a word if you have to look it up yourself. I will continue to highlight the more difficult expressions in green.

Remember that think is followed by an object I think (that) IT is ......

Your first mistake is an example of an indirect statement. Notice how the word order changes. I can show you some more examples in the next class and you can get further practice by clicking on the link under the grammar section.
