In the quaint town of Everwood, a peculiar fad had taken hold of its residents: high-wire walking. Every Sunday, the townsfolk gathered at the park to watch the daring individuals balance on a thin wire stretched between two ancient oaks. The trend, started by an eccentric traveller named Milo, had quickly become the talk of the town.

Among the enthusiasts was a young woman named Clara. Determined to overcome her lifelong fear of heights, she practiced day and night. Her hands were sore, and her muscles ached, but Clara's resolve was stronger than ever. With each step, she imagined herself floating gracefully above the ground, free from the shackles of her anxiety.

One Sunday, the crowd was larger than usual. The sun shone brightly, casting long shadows on the ground. Clara stood at the edge of the wire, her heart pounding. She took a deep breath and stepped onto the wire, her arms outstretched for balance. The crowd held its breath.

Halfway across, a sudden gust of wind shook the wire. Clara's heart skipped a beat. She wobbled, her arms flailing. The crowd gasped. In that split second, with the ground seemingly miles below, she felt her courage plummet.

But then, in a moment of bloody determination, Clara regained her balance. She steadied herself, her eyes focused on the tree ahead. With hindsight, she realised it was her fear that had almost made her fall, not the wind. Every step forward was a victory over the fear that had haunted her for so long.

When Clara finally reached the other side, the crowd erupted in applause. She had done it. Overcome not only the wire but her own inner demons.

However, the triumph came with a fine. The town council, worried about the safety of such stunts, had implemented a penalty for unauthorised high-wire acts. Clara paid it gladly, knowing that the cost was nothing compared to the freedom she felt.

As the fad of high-wire walking began to fade, Clara's story remained. It was a tale of courage and perseverance, a reminder that sometimes, the most daunting challenges can be overcome with bloody determination and a clear vision, even if only in hindsight.

Hi Graham,

1.- Yes. I got a fine a lot of years ago. The fine was for speeding in Madrid, I went 84 Km. per hour, while the speed limit was 80 Km. per hour. In my opinion it was an unfair. I was fined €200, but with the reduced price and therefore I paid €90.

2.- I hate the cold call. Everyday they call me more of 10 times. The Government should ban it because annoy people and it is motive of wasting of time. I reckon it should punish every company which sells products by the cold call with a small or big fine.

3.- The two number has a mistake, it should be: “The police gave me a fine for speeding”.

4.- The boss behaves bad because is an animal, he isn´t like a bear, he is a bear or a boar. Who is bad man, behaves bad. There are not excuses, although he has a sore head or sore throat, he mustn´t behave bad. If you are boss should be balanced because there are people who depend of you and they don´t deserve bad mood. If a boss said that he has a sore head is coward or a lizard.

5.- I had a sore back after doing the garden in my village, during my last holiday, although I suppose that the reason was my youth. Then, I went to rest because I always had heard that, in this case, it´s necessary to rest, but my family told me that all together may go out to hiking. They persuaded me and I only remember that my back was sore at the beginning. When we came back home they ask me is I had a sore back and I felt completely well. Therefore, walking was good to my back, instead that people said about rest.

See you.

Hello José,

There's a hell of a lot of stuff to go through in this post. If I were you, I'd take note of the seven #WOTD and scan through the example sentences. I'd then focus on the words you want to learn. Click on the tweets and write sentences of your own in X. Do the Quizlets. Take a note of any collocations.

1.- Yes, I got a fine many years ago. The fine was for speeding in Madrid, I was going at 84kph when the speed limit was 80 km per hour. In my opinion it was unfair. I was fined €200, but with the reduced price I ended up paying €90.

2.- I hate cold calls. They call me more than 10 times every day. The Government should ban them because they annoy people and they are a complete waste of time. I reckon it should punish every company which sells products by cold call with either a small or big fine.

3.- Number two has a mistake, it should be: “The police gave me a fine for speeding”.

4.- Bosses behave badly because they are animals, they aren't like bears, they are bears or boars. Who is a bad man behaves badly. There are no excuses even if they have a sore head or sore throat, they mustn't behave badly. Bosses should be balanced because there are people who depend on them and they don't deserve bad mood. If a boss says that he has a sore head then he is a coward or a lizard. (I'll just pretend I could decipher all that)

5.- I had a sore back after doing the garden in my village, during my last holiday, although I suppose that the reason was my youth. Then, I went to rest because I have always heard that it´s necessary to take it easy after physically hard work, but my family wanted me to join them all for a hike. They persuaded me and I remember that my back was sore at the beginning. When we came back home, they asked me if I had a sore back and I felt completely well. Therefore, walking was good for/b> my back, instead of resting as many people think.

I agree with you that gardening is hard work. I've also suffered a sore back after a day doing the garden. What's more, it's never-ending. I do like it nonetheless and I find it rewarding.

Hi Graham,

1. Hula is a special dance of Hawaiian people and the hoop is a ring, in consequence, the hula hoop is a dance with a ring. I have just understood the origin of the hula hoop because I didn´t know it. I remember the fad of the hula hoop, but I continued seeing it in the parks of Madrid. It´s possible that it was fad another time.

Hello José,

I'm not usually one for joining in with the latest fad but every now and again I'll try one out. Take games on your tablet or mobile - for a while, I was hooked on Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja (I guess they suited my personality) and when Nokia was the mobile to have. I used to play the Snake game, As a child, I'd play games on my ZX Spectrum (connected to a TV and a cassette player) - Horace and the Spiders being my favourite. And in the seventies there was the Pong game (tennis and football) - so simple but for me, much more fun than the games they have today. I'm not into video games at all - never played them.

1. Hula is a special dance of Hawaiian people and the hoop is a ring, in consequence, the hula hoop is a dance with a ring. I have just discovered the origin of the hula hoop - I had no idea.. I remember the fad of the hula hoop, but I continued seeing it in the parks of Madrid. It´s possible that it was a fad that would regain popularity over the years

2. She lost interest in the latest dietary fad quickly, which included vegetables, fruit, water, legumes, cereal, nuts, seeds and tofu. After seven months, she started to feel bad so she went to the doctor. He told her that she lacked nutrients, was anaemic, had diarrhoea and a lack of myelin. After a few months, they discovered that the spinner could be dangerous for children and, then, authorities banned them in some countries. It was the end of the fad of the fidget spinner. (I never had one but I did have a yo-yo back in the 70s.)

4. When he was young, he always bought clothing in fashion shops following the latest fad. His friends called him posh. Every year he would spend a lot of money on clothes and he accumulated many clothes in his wardrobe. In the end, he gave them away to a chugger. José,

I don't know how I managed to make the last half of the corrections all bold. Anyway, I joverlooked another mistake - Suddenly, he gave up this behaviour ... Refuse to do sth is when sb else wants you to do sth and you don't do it.

How odd! When I write a comment, only the corrections appear in bold. It's when I publish it that it all changes to bold. (I haven't highlighted this comment in bold; let's see how it appears)

Hi Graham,

5. There are companies of marketing which create trend in people and sell their products to other companies producing of goods. Evidently, these companies use social media to promote his products. At the end, they make propaganda and it seems that is fad, because they invent fad. When a lot of people buy things, other copy them and this movement reproduces creating fad that everybody must follow it.

6. Companies intend to create a patent because they could gain a lot of money in the future. There is a special department in many companies which is working in getting a patent or brand. It´s true that they spend much money, but they know that if they have success, they will recover and gain a lot of money. I´ts necessary that their invent was accepted for the majority of people and that it resolves problems a long time. For instance, the Rubik´s cube is not the same now that when it appeared in the first time, it sells less that in the beginning already. Maybe it has had a short lived fad.

7. As long as many people consider cryptocurrency could be durable fad, other people consider that it is a passing fad. I reckon that it could end as a big con. When we talk about criptocurrency we must know that it addresses about a digital active which a central bank doesn´t control neither support, that is, only there are exchanges. I suppose that people who invest in this kind of active are rich men. It´s doesn´t matter for them and they couldn´t care less the risk and the loss of money.

8. Up to the 1940s nobody used pesticidal or chemical products to produce agri-foods and every food was organic product. These are natural and they don´t breed with chemical products. Farmers can´t bring their agri-foods to market, they need agents. There are many agents between farmers and markets and this kind of intermediaries have to gain money and for this reason they require clean, with good aspect and imperishable agri-foods. This is difficult but some farmers have begun to breed organic products which are more expensive than other. Of course, everyone prefers natural product. People said that organic products are health foods, although every food is health food but not natural food. More than the health food fad currently it´s which everyone wants to eat.

See you.

Hello José,

Please FORGIVE ME FOR NOT replyING sooner. I haven't been very motivated OF LATE and I couldn't find the energy needed to TACKLE correcting your comment. I've ENLISTED THE HELP OF Chat GPT to help me. You can write another comment if I haven't replied - it might ENCOURAGE ME TO GET A MOVE ON. You'll see that I've put things in capitals just in case the whole reply appears in bold like previously.

5. There are MARKETING COMPANIES that CREATE TRENDS AMONG PEOPLE and sell THEIR SERVICES to companies that produce goods. Evidently, these marketing companies use social media to promote THEIR products. IN THE END, THEY CREATE ADVERTISEMENTS, and it seems like it's just A FAD because they invent TRENDS. When MANY people start buying things, OTHERS copy them, and this movement SPREADS, CREATING A TREND that everyone feels they must follow.

6. Companies AIM TO CREATE A PATENT because they CAN EARN a lot of money in the future. Many companies have a special department that WORKS ON OBTAINING PATENTS OR TRADEMARKS. IT'S TRUE that they spend a lot of money, but they know that if they ARE SUCCESSFUL, they will recover their investment and make a large profit. IT'S NECESSARY that their INVENTION IS ACCEPTED BY the majority of people and that it SOLVES LONG-TERM PROBLEMS. For instance, the Rubik's cube is not AS POPULAR NOW as it was when it first appeared; it sells LESS THAN IT DID at the beginning. PERHAPS it WAS a short-lived fad.

7. WHILE many people believe cryptocurrency could be a LASTING TREND, others believe it is a passing fad. I reckon it could END UP BEING a big scam. When we talk about cryptocurrency, we must UNDERSTAND that it REFERS TO A DIGITAL ASSET that is neither controlled nor supported by any central bank; that is, THERE ARE ONLY EXCHANGES. I suppose the people who invest in this kind of ASSET are WEALTHY INDIVIDUALS. IT DOESN'T MATTER to them, and they COULDN'T CARE LESS ABOUT the risk or losing money.

8. UNTIL THE 1940S, no one used PESTICIDES or chemical products to produce agri-foods, and ALL FOOD WAS ORGANIC. These WERE NATURAL, and they WEREN'T GROWN with chemical products. Farmers CAN'T BRING their produce directly to market; they need agents. There are many MIDDLEMEN between farmers and markets, and these intermediaries NEED TO MAKE MONEY. For this reason, they require agri-foods that are CLEAN, GOOD-LOOKING, AND NON-PERISHABLE. This is difficult, but some farmers have BEGUN GROWING ORGANIC PRODUCTS, which are more expensive than others. Of course, everyone prefers NATURAL PRODUCTS. People SAY that organic foods are HEALTH FOODS, although every food is healthy, just not NATURAL. Currently, the HEALTH FOOD FAD is something everyone wants to follow.

Advice:

ARTICLES ("A," "AN," "THE"): You often miss articles or use them incorrectly. For example, "THERE ARE COMPANIES OF MARKETING" should be "THERE ARE MARKETING COMPANIES." Focus on learning when to use "a," "an," and "the."

VERB TENSE AND AGREEMENT: Pay attention to subject-verb agreement and verb tenses. For example, "THEY INVENT FAD" should be "THEY INVENT FADS". Also, "IT'S NECESSARY THAT THEIR INVENT WAS ACCEPTED..." should be "IT'S NECESSARY THAT THEIR INVENTION IS ACCEPTED..."

WORD CHOICE: There are many words that don't quite fit, such as "ACTIVE" instead of "ASSET" when referring to cryptocurrency. Try to find more accurate vocabulary.

SENTENCE STRUCTURE: Some sentences are unclear due to awkward phrasing, like "THIS MOVEMENT REPRODUCES CREATING FAD THAT EVERYBODY MUST FOLLOW IT." This could be simplified to "THIS MOVEMENT SPREADS, CREATING A TREND THAT EVERYONE FEELS THEY MUST FOLLOW." Aim for clarity and simplicity in your sentences.

PRONOUNS: Watch out for incorrect pronoun usage. For example, "PROMOTE HIS PRODUCTS" should be "PROMOTE THEIR PRODUCTS," as "companies" is plural.

By focusing on these areas, you'll improve the clarity and professionalism of your writing. Keep practising!

Hi Graham,

9. Yoga is from India. It´s a physical exercise to link mind, respiration and body. It was created to improve the health of people. I have never practiced it, but I was about to begin it, because I had read that yoga is very good if you have stress, anxiety or depression. In addition, some people reckon that, with this practice, the Indians connected with their Gods many years ago. In my opinion, it wasn´t fad because has maintained for years.

10. A lot of people begin an activity without excessive interest and when they know it can´t leave it. I don´t know how is to be rich, but when I begin to know it I suppose that will be impossible for me to leave it. It will be a lifelong passion for me. Pottery is very relaxing. It´s as relaxing as boring. I remember a colleague, who invited me to see him, when he was making a pot in his potter´s wheel. This potter´s wheel span and span many times while he shaped the pot with his fingers. Sleep invaded me.

See you.

P.S. This is the last one with the previous way.

Evening José,

I didn't expect you to work your way through the example sentences demonstrating the use of fad. I'D RATHER you create one or two example sentence for each WOTD or do the translation exercise at the end of the post. In some of the other WOTD posts I have created questions for you to answer.

9. Yoga is from India. It´s a physical exercise to link mind, respiration and body. It was created to improve the health of people. I have never DONE it, but I was about to begin it, because I had read that yoga is very good if you have stress, anxiety or depression. In addition, some people BELIEVE (RECKON IS INFORMAL WHILE IN ADDITION IS QUITE FORMAL) that, with this practice, the Indians connected with their Gods many years ago. In my opinion, it wasn't A FAD BECAUSE IT has EXISTED for years.

10. MANY people begin an activity without MUCH interest and when they GET INTO IT, THEY can´t GIVE UP. I don´t know WHAT IT IS LIKE to be rich, but when I FIND OUT, I suppose that will be impossible for me to RENOUNCE MY WEALTH. It will be a lifelong passion for me. Pottery is very relaxing. It´s as relaxing as IT IS boring. I remember a colleague, who invited me to see him, when he was making a pot ON his potter´s wheel. This potter´s wheel spUn and spUn many times while he shaped the pot with his fingers. Sleep invaded/OVERCAME me.
