In the summertime

In the Summertime - Mungo Jerry

In the summer time when the weather is high
You can stretch right up and touch the sky
When the weather's right
Have a drink, have a drive
Go out and see what you can find

If her daddy's rich, take her out for a meal
If her daddy's poor, just do what you feel
Speed along the lane
Do a ton or a ton and twenty-five
When the sun goes down
You can make it, make it good in a lay-by

With a fat beat, when her daddy with a me
We'll have everybody, but we do as we please
When the weather's fine
We go fishing or go swimming in the sea
We're always happy
Long's (= as long as) we're living in this sound philosophy

Sing along with us, dee dee dee dee dee
Da da da da da, yeah we're hap-pap-py
Da da da dee da doo dee da dee da dee da da, yeah
Da da da da da, dee da da dee da da
Alright

When the wind is here, yeah it's party time
Bring your bottle waggin' back 'cause it will soon be summer time
And we'll signal a cab
We'll go driving or maybe we'll settle down
If she's rich, if she's nice
Bring your friends and we'll all go into town
...

If her daddy's rich, take her out for a meal
If her daddy's poor, just do what you feel
Speed along the lane
Do a turn or return the twenty-five
When the sun goes down
You can make it, make it good and really fine
...

Sing along with us, dee dee dee dee dee
Da da da da da, yeah we're hap-pap-py
Da da da dee da doo dee da dee da dee da da

Song Summary

"When summer arrives and the weather is warm, it's a time for freedom and fun. You feel like you can reach for the sky. With the right weather, thoughts of women come to mind. Enjoy a drink, go for a drive, and explore what the world has to offer.

Regardless of a woman's family background, treat her to a meal or do whatever feels right. Whether you're driving fast or taking it slow, summer nights are perfect for enjoying simple pleasures like stopping at a lay-by.

With a good rhythm, we live by our own rules and enjoy life to the fullest. Whether we're fishing or swimming, as long as we're living by this carefree philosophy, we're happy.

When the wind blows, it's time to party. Bring your own drinks because summer will be here soon. Whether we're out driving or settling down, if she's nice and has friends, we'll all have a good time in town.

In the end, the message is clear: enjoy the summer weather, have fun, and live life to the fullest. Sing along with us and join in the happiness of summer."

Hi, Graham! How are things? Are you in Madrid yet? However, I guess you aren’t working…are you? You are a lucky man.
I love summertime. When I go out it seems like life was easier. That is not right because bad things happen in anytime but I think people are more predisposed to solve problems in this time.
In summertime, I like specially travelling and staying up with friends in the hot nights. This summer, I have a fortnight off in July but I am going to stay at home, resting, I hope. Later, in September, I will go on a cruise to North Europe. I will visit Paris, London, Bruges and Amsterdam. On one hand, I look forward that trip but on the other hand that means that summer will be ending and winter will be coming again and I hate winter!!!

Have a good summer!!

Hi Montse!

I'm finally getting round to replying to your comment.

I had a nice time in Inverness. The weather was fantastic - July was sunny (blue skies most days) with temperatures reaching 30ºC!

I really enjoyed La Provence, discovering many interesting places.

Now I'm easing back into some sort of routine.

Is this your third summer cruise in a row? I hope the weather is as kind for you as it has been for me this summer.

Are you still in Madrid? ("yet" would be like asking "have you returned?" / "still" like asking "haven't you left?")

I look forward to the trip...

See you soon!

You’re right, Graham. This will be my third cruise in a row!! I think it is a great way for travelling with family and friends, and if you reserve it in advance it is not that expensive.
I look up the forecast every day, but I’m afraid that the autumn is coming slowly… I’m glad you had such a good time, and weather, of course.
I’ll tell you when I come back.
